Welcome to: The Magic of Metals
The Non-Ferrous Alliance, which consists of the trade associations representing the UK aluminium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc industries, has produced this new teaching resource, available free of charge to teachers, to bring alive the subject of metals, their history, extraction and uses.
The material is also designed to support work of ideas and evidence. The target range is KS3 and KS4 (14-16 years old) but this versatile material can also be used at KS2 and for post-16 courses including History of Science and General Studies.
The author, Dr Ray Oliver, is a practising science teacher, consultant and examiner.
The programme units cover aluminium, copper, lead, magnesium, nickel, titanium and zinc.
Navigation through the site is simple and intuitive. Once you have selected a particular metal, you are able to access the required units by clicking on the link on the right hand side.
An overview of the issues relating to metals are contained within the 'Survey of Metals' section which can be accessed via the link on the home page.
Many of the images and diagrams are expandable simply by clicking on them. Periodically there are assessment units to check the understanding of the student.
A separate teachers' guide is available as support for the presentation of the information.
Just click on the Periodic Table link on the right to start.
